Super équipe de vendangeurs 2021 ! Un grand merci à tous !

The 2021 season has been complicated, but we are still motivated!
2021 was one of the most difficult vintages we have had, for us and for agriculture in general. The year started late after the vines suffered stress from low temperatures and late frosts. The vines then grew fast in a very intense late spring, which had us racing through the vineyard work. The rainy summer did not make our job any easier, with downy and powdery mildew spreading and needing to be contained.
Faced with environmental and climate challenges, we must play our part in preserving soils and vines.
For the soils, we plan to replace ploughing with the cover crops we sowed this autumn, which will have multiple benefits: natural fertilisation and soil decompaction. Cover crops will also favour microbial biodiversity and act as a carbon trap.
For the vines, we are thinking of adopting tall trellising throughout, which will allow us to stop trimming while favouring photosynthesis and therefore grape ripening. As a first step, the Nuits-Saint-Georges village plot “Les Charmois”, which we have just replanted, will be trained this way, and we will gradually extend the method to the rest of our vineyard.

Looking back on the 2021 harvest
Harvest started on 16 September, close to three weeks later than in 2020, and lasted seven days.
The grape volumes seem higher than in the previous two years; however, we had to sort rigorously, both in the vineyard and in the cellar on a vibrating sorting table.

2021 winemaking: a good surprise!
After the winemaking, 2021 greets us with delicious juices, lightly coloured but highly fragrant!
Macerations lasted from 6 to 10 days, and spontaneous fermentations with indigenous yeasts went perfectly.
All the wines are now ageing, in barrels or in stoneware and concrete eggs.
This year, we went to the Gard to pick up Syrah and Grenache.
Given the climate difficulties of the 2021 vintage, we were not supplied with Gevrey-Chambertin or Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru “Aux Thorey”.
However, we are happy to announce that we have made our first Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru at the estate!

The 2020 vintage is almost ready to buy!
We are currently changing our labels, which is delaying the launch of our 2020 vintage. It should be available by the end of November.
After “Grand Crew” 2020 and the Gamay rosé “Hél’ô de Rose”, both now sold out, we will offer three new cuvées: a Volnay 1er Cru “Santenots”, a Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru “Aux Thorey” and a Vin de France rosé made from Gard Grenache, the third opus of our “La Militante” range. This time we will give €1 per bottle sold to Sea Shepherd, after supporting L214 and The Rhino Orphanage in 2017.
